Privacy Policy for Hanzi Stroke

This Privacy Policy describes how the mobile application Hanzi Stroke ("the App", "we", "our") handles information when you use it. By using the App, you agree to the practices described below.

1. Who we are

2. Information we collect

Hanzi Stroke is designed to work offline as a learning tool. We do not operate any user accounts, analytics, or backend servers that collect personal data. Specifically:

Personal identifiers: We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, device IDs, or precise location.
Microphone (voice input): The App uses your device's microphone only when you actively start a pronunciation-practice exercise. Audio is processed by your device's built-in speech recognition service (Apple's Speech framework on iOS; Google's on-device speech service on Android) to convert speech to text. Hanzi Stroke does not record, store, or transmit your audio.
Local storage: Your in-app settings, learning progress, and favorites are stored only on your device using local storage (SharedPreferences and a local SQLite database). This data never leaves your device.
Network access: The App requests internet permission so that the operating system's text-to-speech and speech-recognition components may operate, and so the operating system may load required system resources. The App itself does not transmit your personal data to our servers.

3. Permissions we request

Microphone (RECORD_AUDIO) — required to recognize your spoken Chinese pronunciation. Only used while a practice session is active.
Internet (INTERNET) — required for system-level text-to-speech and speech-recognition components on some devices.

4. Third-party services

The App relies on the following platform-provided services. Their handling of voice/text data is governed by their own privacy policies:

Apple Speech & AVFoundation (iOS)
Google Speech Services and Android TextToSpeech engine (Android)

We do not integrate any third-party advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, or crash reporting services that collect personal information.

5. Children's privacy

The App is suitable for general audiences, including children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from any user, including children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us so we can address the issue.

6. Data security

Because all user-generated data stays on the device, security depends on the security of your device. We recommend enabling a device passcode and keeping your operating system up to date.

7. Your rights

You can delete all locally stored data at any time by uninstalling the App. There is no remote data for us to delete because we do not collect any.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date and will be effective as soon as it is accessible.
